Fin Whale Song Captured
That’s a recording of a whale song. And — according to a new study which tracked the musical patterns — scientists say the endangered animals are constantly being detected in the waters between New York and New Jersey.
Marine biologists say the fin whale songs were heard year round in the region and appeared to peak in the fall to winter months indicating potential breeding behavior year and longer intervals during the spring possibly representing foraging behavior.
The study from the wildlife conservation society and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was published in the Journal Of Scientific Reports and is part of ongoing research efforts to safeguard endangered whales swimming around the eastern coasts of the United States.
Researchers say with continued monitoring and conservation measures they hope to ensure the long-term survival of these marine species in the region.
