Last year, the United States achieved a groundbreaking new record in energy production.

Overall energy production surpassed energy consumption by nine quadrillion British thermal units. That’s the first time this has happened since the 1950s according to data from the Energy Information Administration.

The boost in total US energy production was primarily propelled by large increases in natural gas and crude oil. Natural gas production surged by 4%, crude oil production spiked by 9% from the previous year. Production of natural gas plant liquids, a byproduct of natural gas extraction surged by 8%.
