State officials say construction started in April and the segment of road will be able to power both heavy-duty and passenger electric cars as they travel at highway speeds of up to 65 mph. Officials behind the project say if tech can power long haul trucks it could be a major game changer in the effort to reduce emissions as industry analysts say big rig truck are the most difficult vehicles to decarbonize.
Heavy duty trucks normally require larger batteries due to their size, weight, and the long distances they travel. However, if trucks could receive power as they drive officials believe it would allow them to carry smaller batteries lowering overall costs and reducing the number of stops needed to recharge.
The state has teamed up with Purdue University on the project which officials expect to be completed in May of 2025.
